Mission Statement of the Public Works Department:
“Provide first class operations, maintenance, repair, engineering, and construction services for all City public infrastructure and improvements.”
- The Director of Public Works primary responsibility is to oversee the Public Works Department. Part of the Public Works Director’s duties include the planning for and implementation, with the assistance of the City Administrator and City Engineer, of street, sewer, and other infrastructure improvements. Public Works Director is Nick Kahler.
- Public Works Department: The 3 full-time employees of Public Works are primarily responsible for street maintenance, cleaning, painting, tree trimming and removal, and snow removal. They also assist with other public works department responsibilities as needed. The Public works Dpt. is also responsible for the collection of “white goods”, primarily kitchen type appliances, and “Electronics”, from TV’s to Computers and Monitors to Stereo Systems. Both White Goods and Electronics require the application of a City Sticker that can be purchased at City Hall during regular business hours.
- Water and Waste Water Department: The Water and Waste Water Department is staffed by 3 full-time employees. The city is served by 3 wells that pump about 150 million gallons of water per year. Water is metered and read on a monthly basis. The City is reading meters electronically by way of a “radio read” system. Our Waste Water plant is best described as a “trickling filter plant” with ultra-violet disinfection. The average flow through the plant is about 400,000 gallons per day. Our plant is considered a Grade III Plant by the Iowa Dpt. of Natural Resources. Due to flooding over the past ten years, we have recently relocated the Plant Lab to higher ground on the property. This allowed us to avoid damaging future flooding and time consuming clean-up in addition to a cost savings of approximately $3,000 per year related to flood insurance that will no longer be needed. The City has completed a flood protection levee at the sewer plant.
- Sanitation Department: The collection of garbage and recycling is contracted through Republic services. Garbage is collected on the North side of town on Wednesday’s and the South side is collected on Friday’s. Garbage and Recycling carts are provided and should be rolled out to the edge of the street on the designated day. Recycling is collected every other Thursday. Yard waste is collected every other Thursday as well from April through November. Monticello has a yard waste site that is NE of town that is open 24hrs a day for the residents of town.
